Marvelous Strange
March 4-28 2016
Five Months Gallery, San Francisco
Marvelous Strange was a month long exploration of the intersection between wonders of the natural world and marvels of the artistic mind, featuring a gallery installation and a gathering place for talks and workshops about curiosity.
The gallery show brought together a collective curiosity cabinet of different artistic perspectives looking out onto the natural world through scientific discovery and historical documentation, as well as the world within, exploring themes such as imagined creatures, artistic interpretations of nature, explorations of identity and discovery.
The programming focused on histories of unusual collections and collectors of the past, the role of learned societies and clubs in fostering creativity as well as scientific development, the interplay between science and art, and discussions about access to knowledge in the modern age, and what the future holds for curious minds.
